In short about drawing chalk: Drawing chalk is an art medium distinguished from chalkboard chalk. Chalkboard chalk is specially designed to be dustless, non-toxic, and used on smooth surfaces. Early chalk drawings date from Paleolithic times, and drawing chalk was a popular medium in the Renaissance and afterwards.
There is and another sort of chalk. It is a soft, white, porous form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite. It is also a sedimentary rock. It is formed in shallow waters by the gradual accumulation of the calcite mineral remains of micro-organisms (coccolithophores), over millions of years.
