Hitchhiking from Kaunas to Barcelona and back to Riga – 12 days story [part 1]

Like all stories have their prehistory so and this one does. :) In January I had my winter holidays. So I and my brother and our cousin bought flight tickets to visit other cousin who’s living in Barcelona. We had really great time, but for me it was a little bit strange to be abroad without my good friend Vilma, with whom I was accustomed to travel. Then I came back and told her this she smiled and we were joking that we have to repeat trip to Barcelona in spring.
Laughing grew into serious discussion how it would be possible to do. I was out of my money at that moment and what is more Vilma was studying in Riga that year. But as we like to say that dreaming is good and if you really want your dreams will definitely come true. We decided to hitchhiked because the trip won’t cost :) just food and drinks. Other problem was time. Then I was free – she had some auditorial at school and then she was free I had some …

But finally at 12 of May we started our trip from Kaunas.

We started hitchhiking from Kaunas about 12.30 because Vilma came from Riga by bus at that moment. We were standing around 20 min. and two polish drivers took us. It is really interesting to travel with trucks, because you are sitting high and can see more and here jokes of other trucks drivers you can hear on the radio. :) They took as to Bialystok.. As we knew from other our trip it is quite good place because a lot of drivers passes. But in there we felt a little bit stuck . But weather was great and company good so we enjoyed our time. At Bialystok one quite young driver with car took us. He was friendly and talkative. He was going from Kaunas Urmas :) aaand he is selling meet. It was really interesting and safe to go with him. But he was going not very far on direction we needed, but he spoke on radio and find other driver who took us. I don’t remember his name, but he gave his visiting-card and told if we need some help or places to stay in that and that part of Poland so he or his colleague could help us. The driver who took us latter didn’t know English at all, neither Russian. :) so he was speaking in polish and we were trying to answer in English . With him we traveled not far, just closer to Warsaw .But he was really funny and crazy. He stopped in small village took me to some shop and bought 3 kebabs and 3 Kubush drinks. :) He was eating while driving and eating with both hands :) crazy…and even he had time to shout on a drunk person who was walking through the street. Finally he was first who finished food. He let us out and carefully look at car if we took all our things. Ok.. Also he showed some directions and told where is Warsaw and where we should go and so on.

Put on our heavy bags and went. Ok MY bag was heavy. Vilma’s was quite light :) We walked and started to hitchhiked, but without success. We were stopping cars in both sides of way, but still without results . Vilma started to ask me if we are really in right place… well I guess so… but .. maybe not… one car finally stopped. Young couple didn't speak English but tried to pretend that they understand us… so they showed the direction and said “Warsaw” … …Sooo we were on right road than driver let us but we went on road to Warsaw. That was the reason why nobody was stopping. We went back and really fast… after maybe 2 min stopped truck… If I remember good he was going to Krakow . He mentioned that after hour he has to stop. OK we fought that it will be in some petrol station. Because maybe he has to go to sleep. Oh again he was not speaking English :) so he is speaking polish and we – English . But as time showed he was stopping in some depot to get his truck loaded. We felt like “We stuck!” . It was quite late and dark….and the main road was …em we didn’t know where it left. He brought some friends . One new English a little bit. Really a little bit. They were really surprised that we are going to Barcelona. Well actually all drivers were surprised and said that we are crazy :) They look at us like we were from zoo. They made a coffee for us..Took some cookies and brought some hot chocolate. We were chatting with them for about 4 hours till the driver could go. Also we lost one hour because of time-zone difference.

Then he moved on we slept for a while... maybe 2 or 3 hours... that was our first day on road in this trip ...
